Is your Clover about to stop getting app updates? What the 2026 sunset means
By Yan Payments
If you’re running one of the original Clover devices, the first models from years back rather than the current lineup, put May 15, 2026 on your calendar. That’s the day Clover stops releasing new app updates for its first-generation hardware. Clover calls it End-of-App-Update, or EOAU.
It sounds alarming, and for some businesses it matters. For plenty of others it barely registers. Which one you are comes down to your hardware and the apps you run.
Which devices this covers
EOAU applies to Clover’s Gen 1 hardware, meaning devices on an older version of Android (below API level 25). By model number:
- Station, model C010
- Mobile, models C020 and C021
- Mini, models C030 and C031
- Flex, models C041 and C042
These have usually been in service five years or more. Clover still sells and supports newer Station, Mini, and Flex models, so the cutoff is about the old hardware, not the product names. If you bought your Clover recently, this probably isn’t about you. (Clover pushed the date back once already, from March 30 to May 15, 2026.)
What actually changes, and what doesn’t
The wording trips people up. EOAU means Clover stops shipping new app updates to these devices. It does not mean the device shuts off on May 15.
Apps you’ve already installed keep running, and you can still take payments. What you lose is forward motion. No new features, no app updates, and over time some apps that need a newer system may stop working or leave the app market. Third-party apps you rely on might change on their end in ways an old device can’t keep up with. That’s the real risk, and it tends to show up gradually rather than all at once.
How to check which generation you have
Two quick ways. Find the model number on the back or bottom of the device and match it to the list above. Or open the device settings and check the Android version; Gen 1 units run older Android below API level 25. If you’re not sure, we can look it up from your account in a minute.
What to do before May 15
If you’re on Gen 1 hardware, there’s no need to panic, but don’t ignore it either.
- Confirm your model against the list above so you know whether you’re affected at all.
- List the apps you actually use, especially anything past the basics: online ordering, loyalty, inventory, accounting connections.
- Ask whether those apps still support your device, and for how long. Most people skip this step.
- If you’re affected, budget for a replacement. Newer Clover hardware runs current software and keeps getting updates.
- Plan the switch for a slow week, not your busiest one, so menu, inventory, and staff training have room to breathe.
There’s an upside to moving beyond the deadline itself: current hardware is faster and keeps getting the security and feature updates an aging device won’t. If an upgrade was already on your mind, this is a fair reason to do it.
