Clover Flex, Mini, or Station: which one actually fits your counter

By Yan Payments

The short version

If your staff moves around, tableside, in line, curbside, get the Flex. If you run a small counter with limited space and mostly stand-and-pay transactions, the Mini fits. If you’re running a busier operation and want a customer-facing screen plus room for a full front-of-house setup, that’s the Station. Most of the decision comes down to how your team actually takes a payment, not which device has the longer feature list.

Clover Flex: the one that moves with you

The Flex is Clover’s handheld. It’s a full point of sale in one unit, touchscreen, card reader, and receipt printer built in, that a server or cashier carries to wherever the sale happens. It connects over Wi-Fi or its own built-in mobile data, so it keeps working if you step outside for a curbside handoff or run a stand at a farmers market. It has a built-in camera that doubles as a barcode scanner, useful for retail as much as restaurants.

It’s the right call for full-service restaurants doing tableside payment, businesses with a line that needs a second register in a pinch, pop-ups, and curbside or delivery pickup. The tradeoff is screen size. It’s a phone-sized display, fine for ringing up a check but cramped for browsing a long item list.

Clover Mini: small footprint, full register

The Mini is a countertop device with an 8-inch touchscreen and a built-in receipt printer, built for a spot where a full Station would be overkill but a handheld doesn’t make sense because the transaction always happens in the same fixed place. It connects over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or mobile data, and pairs with a cash drawer and barcode scanner as accessories.

It suits cafes, boutiques, salons, and service counters, basically anywhere staff ring up a sale standing in one spot and counter space is the real constraint. It’s a full POS, not a stripped-down card reader, so you still get the complete Clover reporting, inventory, and employee tools. It just fits in a smaller box than the Station does.

Clover Station: the full front-of-house register

The Station Duo is Clover’s flagship countertop unit: a large merchant-facing display plus a separate customer-facing screen that handles tap, tip prompts, signature, and the receipt choice on its own. It runs with a cash drawer and receipt printer as a complete register setup, and it includes a fingerprint login for staff, handy if several employees clock in and out of the same terminal through a shift.

This is the pick for full-service restaurants and busy retail counters that need one central register handling high volume, tipping, and a real customer-facing experience rather than just a payment tap.

A quick way to decide

If your business is… Consider
Mobile, tableside, or a line that needs backup Clover Flex
A small counter with one fixed checkout spot Clover Mini
A busy register needing a customer screen and tipping prompts Clover Station

On cost, the handheld Flex runs less than the countertop Mini, and the dual-screen Station costs the most of the three. Exact pricing depends on the plan and processing agreement it’s bundled with, so it’s worth getting a specific quote rather than assuming a list price applies to you.

Plenty of businesses end up running more than one of these together. A Station at the main register with a Flex for the floor or the patio is a common setup. You don’t have to pick just one.

What all three share

However you land, the underlying software is the same. Flex, Mini, and Station all run the full Clover platform, meaning the same inventory list, the same employee accounts and permissions, and the same sales and reporting dashboard, whether the sale happened on a handheld at table 12 or on the Station up front. A lot of merchants get talked into the flashiest device without realizing a cheaper one would have covered the actual workflow, or end up buying the countertop Mini and then wishing they had the Flex’s mobility once a busy Friday night makes it obvious the line needs a second person taking payments off the counter.

If your business is still small and you’re not sure how busy things will get, it’s worth starting with the device that matches today’s volume rather than the one that looks most impressive, since Clover hardware is built to be added to later. A single Flex now and a Station down the line, once volume justifies it, is a completely normal path.

Clover also sells a couple of other form factors worth knowing about if none of these three quite fit: Clover Compact, a smaller all-in-one for tight counters, and Flex Pocket, an even smaller handheld for delivery and pop-up use. Both are worth a look on our hardware page if your business doesn’t match the three most common setups above.
